Voice over Internet Protocol might sounds a bit intimidating for those who are not familiar with VoIP. But the setup and software plus hardware requirement for VoIP is quite simple.

 

What do You Need for VoIP?

There is a simple software and hardware requirement for VoIP.

  • VoIP Softphone
    VoIP Softphone is a software that enable user to make real time phone calls through the use of their laptop/PC and high-speed internet connection. This software employs voice over Internet Protocol as well as Session Initiated Protocol to effectively transfer voice data through broadband internet connection.

  • Computer and broadband Internet Connection
    You need to have a computer. This is the crux of the whole VoIP setup. This computer should have access to a broadband Internet connection. The quality of your VoIP sound will depend on the speed of your Internet connection.

  • Sound card
    You need to have a sound card in your computer. This allows for voice clarity when placing calls.

  • IP phone or phone adapter
    As an alternative to sound cards, you can use an IP phone or a phone adapter.

  • Microphone
    You might also need a microphone to dial and place calls.

  • Analog telephone adapter (ATA)
    In order to connect to a regular phone using your computer, you need an analog telephone adapter, also known as phone adapter. You need this when making calls from your phone to a computer or to another phone.

  • Cellular device
    Additional software and hardware for VoIP include the cellular device. This is quite similar to regular phones. However, this offer additional features not offered by standard phones.

  • Router
    You might also need a router. This would allow you to connect with multiple users or devices.
